Facebook introducing the Project Palantir: Visualization Of People Connecting

Does the name Palantir rings any bell? Of course it does: A palantír (sometimes translated as Seeing Stone but actually meaning “Farsighted” or “One that Sees from Afar”) is a stone that functions somewhat like a crystal ball and appeared in The Lord Of The Rings.

Using J.R.R.Tolkien’s concept a group of Facebook engineers - Jack Lindamood, Kevin Der and Dan Weatherford have created a small project at a Facebook Hackathon event.

The Palantir will display a video of the earth showing Facebook activity visually and geographically in different views. One view shows activity as dots of light that flow upward and the other view shows connections between people around the globe as it occurs.

We’re not sure if Facebook will introduce it, but for sure it looks like a cool feature.
