artificial heart 290x192Not quite the first artificial heart but surely this new one tries its best to model the real thing, and come awfully close.
It is built from technology used in satellites and airplanes, and they say that it will “beat almost exactly like the real thing using electronic sensors to regulate heart rate and blood flow.”

Carmat, the company responsible for the device, with help from the European space and defense group EADS, unveiled the heart at a Paris press conference this week.  The device could save millions — and its all thanks to modern aerospace technology, according to Carmat’s top executives.

The sensors inside the heart will ” measure air pressure and altitude in an airplane or satellite,” enabling it to theoretically react in an instant if the patient suddenly needs more or less blood.” The device has been successfully tested on large mammals, and is awaiting permission to begin clinical human trials.

Wanna know the costs?  $192,000 - enough to give you a heart attack.
