The invisibility cloak

invisible man 198x290No, this is not an article about Tolkien and his fiction work or some new skill in World of Warcraft, but a true invisibility cloak that could become a reality within the next five years.

Using nanotechnology and metamaterials combined with a few drops of Einstein’s theory of general relativity, Purdue University, Indiana discovered that they could create such a device by bending light around itself like the flow of water around a stone, making both the electromagnetic cloak and the object inside hidden.

“The whole idea behind metamaterials is to create materials designed and engineered out of artificial atoms, meta-atoms, which are smaller than the wavelengths of light itself. Whereas relativity demonstrates the curved nature of space and time, we are able to curve space for light, and we can design and engineer tiny devices to do this”(Professor Vladminr Shalaev).

With this new technique we could build powerful optical microscopes that would make DNA visible to the naked eye and also a new generation of superfast computer microchips.
