The smell of space ‘uncovered’: Fried steak with hot metal

space_earth-290x198If you ever wondered what space smells like, well, NASA has solved this mystery for us, the humankind, once more. NASA has appointed Steven Pearce, a chemist also in charge of a fragrance manufacturing company, to recreate the smell of space in a laboratory. They also say this research will help astronauts prepare for space conditions. Now, either I am extremely stupid or just shocked, but how will the scent of space help any astronaut? I mean, you can feed him well before launch, the fried steak scent can drive a man wild, but still, it’s this so helpful?

Mr. Pearce also stated in a recent interview:

“We have a few clues as to what space smells like. First of all, there were interviews with astronauts that we were given, when they had been outside and then returned to the space station and were de-suiting and taking off their helmets, they all reported quite particular odors.”

“For them, what comes across is a smell of fried steak, hot metal and even welding a motorbike,” one of them said.

Well, being a chemistry hater myself, I can’t argue with the scientists, but I don’t know, almost every discovered scent turned into some type of fragrance, history showed us. Are you ready for “Oh the Space” morning perfume?

They’ll never know how the empty space smells like. The space around men smells like farts.
