first-google-satellite-image-290x219This is the first image taken by the GeoEye-1, the Google satellite. Not entirely owned by Google, they share it with the American National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, which collects and analyzes geographical data for national security purposes.

The resolution is awesome, it can even read car number plates from orbit

Most of the images availble on Google Maps are sourced from aerial and satellite photography something that isn’t widely available in many areas across the globe. This new satellite will allow Google to spend less on buying up those images, and also will provide a boost in the resolution of more rural areas across the globe.
