amd shanghai vs barcelona 290x214AMD says it’s ready to launch the new “Shanghai” next-gen chip line within October. AMD also informed the media that the new processors will not have the same fate as the late “Barcelona” chips, launched in 2007.

“We had some mis-starts in getting Barcelona to market and wanted to bring as much velocity to Shanghai as possible. Learn from our mistakes and, as a company, never do that again,” said general manager Pat Patla.

“Shanghai” is a quad-core server processor, built on the new 45nm technology.  Intel, on the other hand, brought the new 45nm processors since late 2007, with great success. If AMD’s Shanghai is not going to succeed, I don’t think anyone gives AMD a solid chance. The new chip will also have its cache memory boosted from 2 Mb to 6 Mb, aiming to outpeform Barcelona by 20 percent. “We’re also turning on HT3 (HyperTransport 3) and you’ll see partners start to validate that in the Q1 time frame,” Patla said.

The desktops were not forgotten by AMD, Daneb will be the next release after Shanghai, a 45nm CPU scheduled to be launched this winter or the first quarter of 2009.
