California bans cellphones while driving

by Cezar Renta, posted September 29, 2008 at 8:14 pm

california-phone-billThe state of California recently passed a bill that forbids drivers to use their cellphones without a hands-free device. It seems that the frenzied lawmakers, rushing the bill, forgot to add the cellphone texting to the bill (sms, mms). Now, lawmakers are working on passing the “add-on” law of the current cellphone speaking bill, thus banning cellphone text writing or reading while driving on the streets of California.

The texting bill will carry the same fine as the speaking bill, $20 fine for the first infraction and $50( + court fees) for any subsequent violations of the law. While I understand all the fuss for the laws, I don’t understand why the fines are so cheap. I don’t think this will stop drivers from using their cellphones without a handsfree device or sending text.

The funny part is, I have read somewhere a study showing that talking on cellphones, with or WITHOUT the hands free device is as dangerous as driving drunk. Now, I don’t know about you, but even if I’m driving with my knees and talking on the phone with my hands free, it’s not the same danger as driving while…having absolutely no reflexes or clear vision.

The fines are not cheap WHEN they are truly enforced.

Someone told me about a similarly “cheap” fine introduced in an european country, about 30 euros for throwing garbage out the car window. Now, the fine seemed “cheap” but (due to security cameras) he paid it every time…so after he paid 30 for throwing a cigarette butt, another 30 for a napkin, another 30 for a Coke can…all in the same day…well, let’s just say he never threw anything ever again…

Now imagine how many times one speaks from his phone in the car, multiply that with 50 bucks, multiply it again with 30 days…and imagine the person getting THAT bill at the end of the month.

ya, it’s true but this is valid only if they have eyes everywhere (cameras, police). And as I know, the law is pretty harsh on driving while drunk and still, the US has some issues there :)
