News from Apple
At the long-awaited press conference that was held in San Francisco, Apple chief Steve Jobs, announced the fourth generation Nano-the curved iPod music player, and joked about the state of his much-discussed health.
He listed a few of the Nano’s environmental credentials, such as arsenic-free glass and a mercury and PVC-free body that is “highly recyclable”. Priced at $149 with 8 gigabytes of storage, $50 less than the predecessor model and a 16-gigabyte version for $199, the new Nano is capable of playing back 24 hours of music or four hours of video. Also a new feature was introduced “shake to shuffle” mode, which sends the gadget to shuffle mode with the flick of a wrist allowing you to go backwards and forwards on your playlist.
“We’re really, really excited about all these products. We think people are going to have a lot of fun.” (Steve Jobs)
Mr Jobs also talked of Apple’s new Genius function which allows users to create automatic playlists from the iPod’s library with just one click of a button.
He explained that this function works by taking a certain song and based on that song the application will create a playlist library and could also suggest other tracks the user might want to buy.
There was also a presentation of iPod Touch, a thinner, $229 version of the Web-connected, with rounded edges and 8 gigabytes of storage. At the high end, Apple has priced the 32 gigabytes model at $399.
“Apple has done it again. They have reinvented the line in a way to capture mainstream consumers’ hearts and minds and doing at a price point that is extremely affordable” (Michael Gartenburg, vice president of Jupiter Media ).
