Last.fm is supporting the independent artists
The online music service Last.fm announced the official launch of the Artist Royalty program and that it will start paying royalties to unsigned and independent bands that use this service to upload their music. Artist will earn royalties every time their music is played through the Last.fm streaming radio.
It seems that artists have uploaded close to half a million tracks into the Last.fm database since this program was announced. Now if an artist is uploading a song he can choose the Royalty Program option. Until this option was available Last.fm used another option, a premium subscription (beta).
“This is a big day for independent artists. We’re leveling the playing field by offering them the same opportunities as established bands to make money from their music. The young musician making music in a bedroom studio has the same chance as the latest major label signing to use Last.fm to build an audience and get rewarded. The Artist Royalty Program is another revolutionary step towards helping musicians take control of their music — and, more importantly, make a living from it.” (Martin Stiksel, Last.fm co-founder).
A big round of applause to the Last.fm team, this is good news indeed!
