China’s Great Wall of…glass

Greenpix If you plan to visit China and see the Olympics live, well make sure you don’t miss the new “wall” in Beijing. Greenpix , one of the largest LED displays in the world it is composed of 2,292LED light over a massive 24,000 square feet. Its name also stands for the fact that it runs on photovoltaic technology: during the day it absorbs light and during the night uses the same power.

The ones who designed the “wall” New York based architect Simone Giostra and British building engineers Arup with the help of German manufacturers Schueco and Sunways developed a new technology for laminating photovoltaic cells in a glass curtain wall: the cells are no longer placed uniformly, they are now arranged and programmed to change the density which allows for more natural light to reach the interior resulting in much more performance.

Simone Giostra is billing the new attraction as; “the most radical example of photovoltaic technology applied to an entire building’s envelope to date”. The Xicui Entertainment Complex will be opened to the public in June 20.
