How important are inbound and outbound links to a good SEO?

by Cezar Renta, posted November 1, 2007 at 11:40 pm

Recently, I’ve noticed that people care less about the actual traffic optimization the accent is placed entirely on upon pagerank and alexa rank. First of all, this isn’t a good SEO approach, actually this isn’t a SEO approach at all. Google PR is irrelevant to SEO and Alexa Rank turned up to be unreliable over the years. These 2 tools are used mainly for monetization and I don’t think it will change soon. Now back to our topic. How important are links to a good SEO?

Backlinks

First of all I will start by pointing that links are one of the most important factors of SEO. Webmasters tend to build their link development campaign toward high PR websites. It’s true that Google cares if the pages that link to you are important and relevant, but what happens with young websites, with good content and related to you? Taking backlinks from them isn’t important? Well, I say it’s very important. Every webmaster should try to take backlinks on ANY relevant and content worthy page out there, even if that page has PR0 or PR1. It doesn’t matter alot actually and you can get as many of those as you can, the more, the better I say. Every backlink, with a very good keyword anchor will add a small brick to your successful SEO campaign. Stop this PR picking drama and instead of wasting time mailing, begging the high PR websites 10 times per day, you should look for any content related websites.

Outbound links

Most webmasters are making the sites a dead end for the search engines. All the links are built around internal redirects, thinking they might preserve the PR of the page and stop caring about linking bad sites. Once again, this is not very good. Don’t get me wrong, search engines are not penalizing your page if they see redirected links but they will consider your site a dead end and it may turn up badly. PR preservation isn’t a good SEO method and you can link to related websites with no problem, as long as you do your research and not link to bad websites or banned websites. Also, you may want to have a deep internal linking to your webpages, crawlers seem to love that for some reason :)

In conclusion, linking is very important to SEO, both internally and externally. Stop chasing PR websites, stop waiting for the PR updates and build a slow, constant link building campaign. You won’t mind 10,000 sites linking to you, instead of 10 high PR ones right?

backlinks are the base of SEO but as you said, many consider them only for PR and take links from high PR pages which is wrong.there are a ton of websites out there with good quality content and nobody links to them because they have pr1-2.
