Google PageRank Update - algorithms went berserk

by Cezar Renta, posted October 31, 2007 at 3:14 pm

We are all wondering what happened on the 26th with the PageRank update. Suspicions float everywhere on the Web but nobody knows for sure why Google is acting like this. The general theory is that Google is hitting websites that sell links but it seems like websites that were clean(regarding paid links) were hit also by this update. Now, I am wondering, if Google started this little war against link selling websites, why is PR still a worthless ranking tool?

Lets review PR and this update for a second. Ok, Google decided that paid links are bad and they should do something about it by lowering the PR of the link selling website, I understand that, it’s acceptable. Going back to the 26th, we can all assume that Google decided finally that PR should mean something and decided to stop artificial PR boost led by link sellers on high PR page, we understand that. But, what was PR? actually what IS PR? PR is a link selling tool actually, it’s used by people to sell links,a marketing tool. When did PR had recently (over the past 3-4 years) an impact over the SERPs? Well, as I know..it didn’t. Now, once again, I’m asking myself, Google…Why?What? Why?

Personally I am skeptical about this and about Google’s marketing decision, it’s obvious that Google profits will the raised just “a little” by selling links through their own network, so in the end, it’s all pink. The good part is that, I know, soon enough some webmasters will get around G’s algorithm and they will start selling links again, but under different methods.Well, we will wait until then.

Meanwhile, I expect some official statement from Google, regarding this update and their plans or maybe Matt Cutts can shed a light on this one…we will see

Now, if you want my advice, don’t stop selling links, we all need monetization. You can remove services such as Text Link Ads and you can add direct paid links in your footer pages or under different headings. Don’t stuff them tho..
